Blue check marks on WhatsApp Business: what each check means and whether to turn them off

Published on October 24, 2026

You sent the quote, the customer hasn’t replied and the checks are still gray.

Or they turned blue and there’s still no answer.

The check marks next to each message tell you a lot about a chat, but only when you know what each one means and when they don’t show up.

The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center, with the link in each paragraph.

What each check means

According to the WhatsApp Help Center, there are three signs:

  1. One gray check: the message was sent.
  2. Two gray checks: the message reached the person’s phone or one of their linked devices.
  3. Two blue checks: the person read the message.

If you see a clock, the message hasn’t gone out yet, usually because of a connection problem.

In a group, the two blue checks only show up once every member has read it.

And when you edit a message, its read receipts start over, so you can see who viewed the new version, per the same official page.

We cover editing in our post on how to edit or delete a WhatsApp Business message.

How to see when the customer read it

To check the exact time a message was delivered and read, here are the steps on Android, per the official page:

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Tap and hold the message you sent.
  3. Tap the Info icon, the letter i inside a circle. On some phones it’s under More options, the three dots, then Info.

That screen shows whether the message was delivered, read or, for a voice message, played.

A voice message can show as seen without having been played, according to the Help Center.

So the customer may have opened the chat and still not listened to it.

Why the checks didn’t turn blue

Gray checks don’t always mean the customer is ignoring you.

The Help Center lists the most common reasons:

  • You or the customer turned off read receipts.
  • The customer blocked your number.
  • The customer hasn’t opened the chat yet.
  • One of you has a connection problem.
  • It’s the first message the person gets from you, and the read receipt may not come through.
  • The date and time on one of the phones are wrong.

So it’s best not to read too much into a single check mark.

Our post on blocking a contact on WhatsApp Business explains what blocking does and what it doesn’t.

Can you turn off the blue checks?

Yes.

On Android, tap More options, then Settings, Privacy, and turn off Read receipts, per the official page.

Before you do, think about the trade-off.

If you turn them off, you also stop seeing when others read your messages, and you may not see who viewed your status, according to the same page.

In groups and for voice messages, read receipts can’t be turned off at all.

For a business, knowing the customer read your quote is usually worth more than hiding that you read theirs.

Status has its own post, by the way: WhatsApp Business Status.

What blue checks say about your support

There are check marks on the other side too.

When a customer sees two blue checks on their question and no reply comes, they take it as read and left for later.

That stings more than a slow reply to a message nobody had opened yet.

If your team can’t answer right away, a short reply saying when you’ll get back to them already changes how it comes across.

After hours, the ideas in our post on how to answer WhatsApp after hours help with that.

Where we come in

Check marks show whether a message arrived and was read.

What we do is set up and run the assistant on your business WhatsApp, using your own business content, so a question that was read doesn’t go unanswered, and that hands the chat to someone on your team when the topic needs a person.
