Blocking a contact on WhatsApp Business: what the customer sees and when it's worth it
Published on October 21, 2026
Every business that serves customers on WhatsApp eventually gets the chat that can’t go on: insults, threats, scams, nonstop advertising.
That’s what blocking is for.
The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center and apply to both the regular app and WhatsApp Business.
What happens when you block someone
Under the official page about reporting and blocking, you stop getting messages, calls and status updates from that number.
The person also stops seeing your last seen, your online status, your new status updates and any changes to your profile photo.
Some things don’t change, according to the same official page:
- The old chat stays in your chat list. You can delete or archive it if you want.
- The contact stays in your phone’s address book, and your number stays in theirs.
- If you’re both in the same group, you’ll still see each other’s messages there.
- If the person writes from another number, each number has to be blocked separately.
Will the customer find out?
WhatsApp doesn’t tell them.
The official page about being blocked lists what a blocked person may notice: their messages only show one check mark, their calls don’t go through, your profile photo doesn’t update and your last seen disappears.
The same page says these signs can have other causes too, and that WhatsApp doesn’t tell anyone who blocked them.
In practice, an observant customer may suspect it.
So if there’s still an open order or request in the chat, it’s worth wrapping up with a polite line before you block.
How to block someone
Under the official page on how to block and report (Android), the path through settings is:
- Tap the three dots and Settings.
- Tap Privacy and Blocked contacts (in some versions, Privacy, Contacts, Blocked accounts).
- Tap the add contact icon.
- Pick the contact you want to block.
The same page shows a shortcut: tap and hold the chat in your list, then tap the three dots, Block and Block again.
When you block from the chat, the page notes that a Report to WhatsApp option shows up.
Uncheck it if you only want to block.
On iPhone, under the iPhone version of the same page, you open the chat, tap the contact’s name and tap Block.
You can also swipe left on the chat and tap More and Block.
Blocking isn’t reporting
Blocking only cuts off contact with your number.
Reporting tells WhatsApp that the account is sending spam, scams or abusive content.
Under the official page about reporting and blocking, when you report someone, WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages in the chat and basic info about the last five calls, if there were any, and the reported person isn’t notified.
The same official page also says that reporting without blocking doesn’t stop the messages, and that a report doesn’t guarantee the account gets banned.
For scams and threats, the usual move is to do both.
For a customer who’s just difficult, blocking is enough.
Before you block, keep what you need
If the chat contains threats or a scam, the official page about reporting and blocking suggests taking screenshots and backing up your chat history, and contacting the police if there’s a crime or a safety risk.
The chat stays on your phone after you block, but if someone deletes it by accident, the record is gone.

How to unblock someone
Under the official page on how to block and report (Android), tap the three dots and Settings, then Privacy, Contacts and Blocked contacts, tap the contact and tap Unblock.
Anything the person sent while they were blocked won’t arrive later, whether it’s a message, a call or a status update.
When blocking is worth it
It’s worth it for someone who insults your team, makes threats, tries a scam or sends ads nonstop.
It isn’t worth it for a customer who’s upset about a delay or a price: that person is still a customer, and a tough conversation usually gets resolved by a person replying calmly.
The reverse matters too.
The WhatsApp Business Policy says that blocks and reports from recipients can lead Meta to limit how many messages a business number can send.
We explain this in the post on WhatsApp Business banned for spam.
Where we come in
We set up and run the assistant on your business number.
It stays polite even when a customer loses patience, and when the topic needs a person, it brings in someone from your team.
Deciding who gets blocked is still up to you.
