Edit or delete a WhatsApp Business message: time limits and what customers see
Published on October 20, 2026
Sending the wrong time, the wrong address or one customer’s message in another customer’s chat happens to every business that answers on WhatsApp.
The app gives you two ways to fix it: edit the message or delete it for everyone.
The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center and apply to chats in both the regular app and WhatsApp Business.
Edit or delete: which one to use
Editing is for fixing text that’s already in the right chat.
The official page on editing messages says you have up to 15 minutes after sending to edit, and the change shows up for everyone in the chat.
Deleting for everyone is for when the message shouldn’t be there at all, either because it went to the wrong chat or because the mistake is too big for a quick fix.
Under the official page on deleting messages, you have about two days after sending to request that it be deleted for everyone.
How to edit a message
On Android, according to the official page on editing messages:
- Long press the message and tap More options, the three dots.
- Tap Edit and fix the text.
- Tap the checkmark to save.
On iPhone, according to the same official page, iPhone version:
- Long press the message and tap Edit.
- Fix the text and tap the blue checkmark.
- Tap OK.
Only text can be edited.
The official page on editing messages notes that you can’t edit photos, videos or other types of media.
If you sent the wrong product photo, the fix is to delete it and send it again.
What the customer sees after an edit
The customer sees the new text with the word “edited” next to the timestamp, according to the official page on editing messages.
If they’re on an older version of the app, they see a note asking them to update.
The part that matters most for customer service is something else: under the same official page, editing doesn’t send a new notification.
If the customer already read the message before you fixed it, they may never look at it again.
When the edit changes something important, like a time or a price, send a short line right after, for example: “I fixed the time in the message above, sorry for the mix-up.”
How to delete for everyone
Under the official page on deleting messages, on Android you open the chat, long press the message, tap the trash can and choose Delete for Everyone.
You can select several messages at once.
In their place, the customer sees “This message was deleted”.
The same official page on deleting messages lists the limits, and they matter:
- You and the person who got the message need the latest version of WhatsApp.
- The customer may have seen the message before it was deleted.
- If the deletion fails, you won’t get any notice.
- People on iPhone may still have the photo or video saved in their Photos app, even after the message is gone from the chat.
Deleting just for yourself
Delete for me removes the message only from your phone, and the customer still sees everything.
The official page on deleting messages says that after you choose this option you have five seconds to tap Undo, and a deleted message can’t be brought back unless it’s in a backup.
So be careful with the habit of clearing customer chats.
If you need that history later, the official page on deleting messages points to only one way back, which is a backup.
Keep your WhatsApp Business backup up to date or export the chat before you clear it.
When the message went to the wrong customer
This is the case where deleting for everyone is the right call, and the sooner the better.
Don’t wait: the roughly two-day window on the official page on deleting messages is a limit, not time to think it over.
Then send the right content in the right chat.
If the message had someone else’s information, like a name, phone number or address, keep in mind that, under the official page on deleting messages, the customer may have seen it before you deleted it and, on iPhone, may still have the photo.
It’s worth telling the person whose information got out and writing down what happened.

A way to make fewer mistakes
- Use quick replies for the texts you send all the time, like your address and hours, instead of typing them again.
- Before you paste a message, check the name at the top of the chat.
- When the topic is a price or a time, reread before you send, not after.
- If you need to fix something, tell the customer with a short line, because edits don’t send a new notification.
Where we come in
Many of these mistakes come from rushing to answer lots of people at once by copying and pasting.
We set up and run the assistant on your business number: it works from your own business content, without mixing up one customer’s chat with another’s, and brings in someone from your team when the topic needs a person.
