Two-step verification on WhatsApp Business: how to protect your business number
Published on October 22, 2026
Your business’s WhatsApp number is where orders, bookings and payment receipts arrive.
If someone else gets into it, they’re talking to your customers in your name.
Two-step verification is there to make that harder: the account starts asking for a second check.
The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center.
What two-step verification is
The official page about two-step verification explains that it’s optional and uses two different forms of authentication, like SMS and a password, to protect the account against unauthorized access.
Once it’s on, you can choose your phone number, password or email address as the extra step.
One change is underway: the 6-digit PIN the feature used to rely on is being upgraded to a password, according to the official page on managing two-step verification.
If you already have a PIN, you can switch to a password by following the steps on that page.
How to enable it on Android
Here’s the Android path, per the official page on managing two-step verification:
- Tap More options (the three dots), then Settings, Account and Two-step verification.
- Switch on the Turn on two-step verification toggle.
- Create a strong password and confirm it.
- Enter an email address you can access and tap Next, or tap Skip.
- Tap Trust this device or Skip.
On iPhone the path may be different, so check it on your device.
The password needs at least 8 characters, at least 1 letter and at least 1 number, as the official page on forgotten passwords says.
Don’t skip the email
The email step looks optional, but it’s what gets you out of trouble if you forget the password.
According to the official page on forgotten passwords, if you can’t remember the password when logging in, you can tap Verify another way and get a code by email, SMS or voice call.
For a business, use a company email address that will still exist after someone leaves the team.
You add or change the email under Settings, Account and Email address, confirming it with a six-digit code, per the official page on managing two-step verification.
Trusted devices
With the feature on, you can mark the devices you use every day as trusted, and logging in on them is faster.
The official page about two-step verification points out that a trusted device isn’t the same as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop.
Linked devices are what let you read and answer messages on more than one device at once.
You can remove a device from the same Trusted devices screen, according to the official page about two-step verification.
If a shop phone was replaced, sold or kept by someone who left the team, take it off that list.
If you forget the password
If no other way of verifying works, the option to reset the account unlocks after a few days, and it can’t be undone, per the official page on forgotten passwords.
What you lose depends on when you last logged in.
If it was less than 30 days ago, the messages you received since then are deleted, and your account history and profile stay.
If it’s been more than 30 days, your messages and your profile are deleted, with no way back, per the same page.
That’s why the email on file matters so much.
While you’re logged in, you can create a new password without entering the old one, under Account, Password and Change password, as the same page on forgotten passwords shows.
Who keeps the password
The two-step verification password belongs to the business owner, not to whoever is answering the phone that day.
Keep it in a password manager or somewhere only management can reach, and change it the same day someone who knew it leaves the team.
If your business already has a rule for the bank password, use the same rule here.
Where we come in
Protecting the number is the business’s job, and it takes a few minutes.
The support that runs through that number is where we help: we set up and run the assistant on your business WhatsApp, using your own business content, booking on the calendar you already use and bringing in someone from your team when the topic needs a person.
