WhatsApp Business or regular WhatsApp: which one for your shop
Published on October 16, 2026
The WhatsApp you use with friends and WhatsApp Business are two different apps.
Both send messages, photos and audio.
The difference is what customers see about your business and the tools Business adds to organize and reply to chats.
What each one is for
WhatsApp Messenger (the regular app) is for chatting with friends, family and also with businesses.
The WhatsApp Help Center is clear: if you’re not a business, you don’t need to download Business.
Stick with Messenger for free.
WhatsApp Business is a free app built for small businesses, available on Android and iPhone.
According to the same official page, it feels and works like Messenger, and on top of that it offers tools to automate, sort and reply faster.
What Business adds
Three features the Help Center highlights in the app:
- Business profile, with your company’s address, email and website.
- Lists, to organize contacts and find chats more easily.
- Messaging tools, to reply to customers more quickly.
On the profile, the official edit page lists what stays public: name, address, username, category, description, email and website.
When you create the account, the download page lets you pick up to three business categories, and you can’t invent a custom one.
A complete profile cuts down on messages like “what are your hours” or “where are you”, because the info is already visible.
The profile page says exactly that: an up-to-date profile keeps customers informed and reduces repeated questions.
The same number on both apps
The most important rule if you’re switching: Messenger and Business are separate apps, and you can’t use the same phone number on both at the same time.
You can move your account from one to the other.
If you already use Messenger and want Business on the same number, the download page confirms you can migrate the account, including chat history and media.
You can also move back from Business to Messenger.
And you can keep both apps on your phone, as long as each one uses a different number.
One detail that often trips people up when they switch back: when you move from Business to Messenger, Business-only features don’t come with you.
The official page on moving accounts warns that catalog items and collections can’t be transferred.
Business app and Platform: not the same thing
Meta has two products for businesses.
The page on WhatsApp Business products draws the line like this:
- WhatsApp Business app: for small businesses, free, on a single device, to reach hundreds of customers, with customization and integration with other tools.
- WhatsApp Business Platform: for medium and large businesses that need to manage high volumes of conversations, either directly or through a Business Solution Provider.
The app covers your business card and organization on the phone.
The Platform comes in when volume and automation go beyond what one device can handle alone.
The app download page also points anyone looking for a more advanced experience toward the Platform.
Where the app stops and what support still needs
Greeting and away messages in the app itself let people know a message came in or that you’re unavailable.
They don’t read the customer’s question or check your calendar.
The official pages for greeting messages and away messages show what each one does, and both only go out when your phone is connected to the internet.
For a shop that gets price questions, open slots and “do you have this” all day, Business organizes the profile and the inbox.
Who answers each variation is still you, or the service set up on the business number.
Where we come in
We set up the assistant on the number you already use in WhatsApp Business (or on the official API, when volume calls for it).
It works from your business content, clears up questions, books on your real calendar and hands over to a person anything off script.
The app handles the profile and the built-in tools.
We handle the chats that don’t fit in a fixed message.
