Forwarding limits on WhatsApp Business: why your message won't go to everyone
Published on October 24, 2026
This week’s promotion, a photo of a new product or a holiday notice comes in, and the quickest idea seems to be forwarding the same message to every customer.
Then WhatsApp stops letting you pick chats after a few, or the message arrives with an odd label.
Your phone isn’t broken: you’ve hit the forwarding limit.
The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center, with the link in each paragraph.
How many chats at once
According to the WhatsApp Help Center, you can forward a message to up to five people or groups at a time.
To send it to more people, you have to forward it again, five at a time.
When the message reached you already forwarded by someone else, the rule gets tighter: it can still go to up to five chats, but only one of them can be a group, per the official page on how to forward messages.
What Forwarded and Forwarded many times mean
Any message you forward that you didn’t write yourself shows the Forwarded label, to you and to whoever receives it, per the official page.
The customer can tell that the text wasn’t written for them.
If the message has gone through a chain of five or more chats, it gets the Forwarded many times label and a double arrow icon, according to the Help Center.
In that case, it can only be forwarded to one chat at a time, as the page on how to forward says.
WhatsApp explains that these limits are there to keep conversations personal and to help prevent spam and misinformation.
The count lives in a counter protected by end-to-end encryption, so not even WhatsApp knows how many times a message was forwarded, per the same official page.
How to forward on Android
Here are the steps, per the official page:
- In the chat, tap and hold the message. To forward several, tap the others after you select the first one.
- Tap the Forward icon, the arrow curving to the right.
- Search for or pick the chats you want to send it to.
- Tap Send.
Photos, videos, locations and contacts can be forwarded too, so you don’t have to upload the file again, per the same page.
That helps day to day: the product photo you already sent one customer goes to the next one in two taps.
So how do you reach lots of customers?
Forwarding five at a time isn’t the way to handle a big list.
The Help Center itself suggests creating a group or sharing links when you want to reach many people.
For a business, there are also broadcast lists, which we cover in our post on whether WhatsApp Business broadcast lists are paid, and channels, from our post on the WhatsApp Business channel.
One more thing to watch.
Sending the same message to lots of people who didn’t ask for it is the shortest path to getting your number blocked, as we show in our post on WhatsApp Business being banned for spam.
The forwarding limit is a brake; respecting who actually wants to hear from you is what protects your number.
Where we come in
Forwarding helps you repeat the same information.
What we do is set up and run the assistant on your business WhatsApp, using your own business content, so the question that person asked has where to be checked and handing the chat to someone on your team when the topic needs a person.
Every customer gets a reply written for their own chat, with no Forwarded label.
