Disappearing messages on WhatsApp Business: should you turn them on in customer chats?

Published on October 20, 2026

Disappearing messages make the messages in a chat vanish on their own after a set time.

For a person, it’s a privacy feature.

For a business that agrees on times, prices and deliveries over WhatsApp, it’s also a way to lose the record of what was agreed.

The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center and apply to both the regular app and WhatsApp Business.

How the feature works

Under the official page about disappearing messages, you choose whether messages disappear 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days after they’re sent.

The duration only applies to new messages, and anything already in the chat stays there.

The same official page says the message disappears for both the sender and the recipient.

Photos and videos received while the feature is on also disappear and aren’t saved to the phone.

Customers can turn it on too

In an individual chat, either person can turn the feature on or off, according to the official page on turning disappearing messages on or off.

So a customer who uses disappearing messages in all their chats may reach your number with the feature already on.

When that happens, you don’t have to just go along with it.

The same official page says either person can turn it off at any time.

The polite move is to give a heads-up first with a short line, for example: “I’m going to turn off disappearing messages here so we keep a record of your order details, is that okay?”

Watch out for the default timer

WhatsApp has an option that turns the feature on for every new chat at once.

Under the official page on turning disappearing messages on or off, the path on Android is:

  1. Tap the three dots and Settings, then Privacy.
  2. Tap Default message timer.
  3. Choose 24 hours, 7 days, 90 days or Off.
  4. If you want, also select existing chats and confirm.

On iPhone, the steps are in the iPhone version of the same page.

On a business number, leaving the default timer on means every new customer chat starts with a countdown.

For most businesses, the safer choice is to leave it Off and turn the feature on only in chats where there’s a reason for it.

What disappears and what stays

The feature doesn’t erase everything, and the official page about disappearing messages lists the exceptions:

  • If someone backs up before the message disappears, it’s included in the backup. When the backup is restored, the disappearing messages are deleted.
  • When you reply by quoting a message, the quoted part may still be visible after the time is up.
  • A message forwarded to a chat without the feature on won’t disappear in that other chat.
  • The message preview may keep showing until the person opens WhatsApp.

You can also stop a specific message from disappearing.

The official page on turning disappearing messages on or off says you can keep a message in the chat as long as the time hasn’t run out.

Under the official page about disappearing messages, the sender is in control: if someone keeps a message you sent, you get a notification and have about 30 days to unkeep it.

In some countries, messages related to payments or orders aren’t covered by disappearing messages, according to the same official page.

You can only delete those one by one, by hand.

When it makes sense for a business

It makes sense when the chat receives information the business doesn’t need to keep on the phone, like a photo of an ID sent only so you can check it.

In that case, turning on 24 hours or 7 days in that chat cuts down on what stays on the device.

Before you do, write down outside WhatsApp anything you need to keep, because once the time is up the message disappears on both sides, as the official page about disappearing messages explains.

How to handle customer data in support is covered in the post on LGPD (Brazil’s data protection law) in WhatsApp support.

It doesn’t make sense when the chat is the proof of what was agreed: a quote, a booked time, a delivery address, payment terms.

In those cases, the chat needs to last.

If you want to keep a history, see how to export the chat and how to keep your WhatsApp Business backup up to date.

Where we come in

For a business, what was agreed shouldn’t depend on a chat that can disappear.

We set up and run the assistant on your business number: when it books an appointment, the time goes into the support calendar instead of living only in the chat history.

When the topic needs a person, it brings in someone from your team.
