Communities on WhatsApp Business: what they are, the limits and why the business app can't create one

Published on October 19, 2026

A WhatsApp community brings people together in topic-based groups.

The business sends announcements to everyone, and members join the groups they care about.

The official page about communities puts it this way: admins send important updates, and members explore and chat in the topic groups.

Personal messages and calls inside a community stay end-to-end encrypted, according to the same page.

That setup fits a class of students, salon regulars or a building’s residents.

The part that trips up anyone on the business app is different: you still can’t create the community from inside WhatsApp Business.

WhatsApp Business still can’t create the community

The official page about communities on the WhatsApp Business app is clear: it isn’t currently possible to create a community on the WhatsApp Business app.

You can take part in communities you’re already in, and they also show up as groups in your chats list.

The same page and the page on creating a community leave two paths if the number is already a business number: ownership may have been transferred from someone on the consumer WhatsApp app, or the community may have been created on the consumer app and the number later registered as a business.

In both cases you end up managing it in Business without creating it from scratch there.

To find communities on the business app, the page about communities on WhatsApp Business says: tap More options, then Communities.

How to create one (on regular WhatsApp)

While Business can’t create one, the official path is the consumer WhatsApp app.

According to the page on creating a community, on Android the steps are:

  1. Open the Chats tab.
  2. Tap the new chat icon.
  3. Tap New community, then Get started.
  4. Enter a name. A description and an icon are optional.
  5. Confirm to save.

The name can be up to 100 characters, per the page on creating a community.

The description should give members a sense of what the community is about.

Limits that matter in practice

The page on creating a community lists three numbers that shape how you run it:

  • Up to 100 groups per community. An announcements group is created automatically alongside it.
  • Up to 2,000 members in total, counting the announcements group and the community’s other groups. The page about announcements repeats the 2,000 cap for the announcements group.
  • Once the community is full, no new member joins until someone leaves.

The announcements group is the community’s notice board.

Only admins post.

Members can react, reply, vote in polls, see how many members there are, report or mute, according to the page about community announcements.

Leaving the announcements group also means leaving the community: you can’t stay in the community without that group.

Community, channel and the customer chat

Three different things, three uses:

  • A community organizes groups and announcements for people who already belong to it.
  • A channel is a one-way broadcast: followers read and react, without replying to the admin, per the page about channels on the WhatsApp Business app.
  • Orders, price questions and bookings still happen in a one-to-one chat with the business number.

A community doesn’t replace customer support.

It gathers people who already know the business.

When someone in a group wants to book a slot or ask a private question, that conversation leaves the notice board and goes to a chat with the business.

Where we come in

When a community sparks a private chat, someone has to answer quickly.

We set up and run the assistant for those chats on your business’s WhatsApp: it works from your own business content, books on the calendar you already use and brings in someone from your team when the topic needs a person.
