WhatsApp Business cart: how customers build an order without sending ten messages
Published on October 30, 2026
A customer wants three items, asks the price of one, then another, and the chat turns into a list scattered across ten messages.
The WhatsApp Business cart exists to pull all of that into a single order.
It runs on top of your catalog, so it’s worth having the catalog ready first.
The rules below come from the WhatsApp Help Center, with the link in every paragraph.
What the cart is
When your business has a catalog on WhatsApp Business, customers can add items from it to a cart, according to the WhatsApp Help Center.
For the feature to work, both you and your customers need the latest version of WhatsApp, says the same official page.
If you don’t have a catalog yet, the steps are in our post on how to create a catalog in WhatsApp Business.
How to turn the cart on or off
On Android, here’s the path, according to the official page:
- From the Tools tab, tap Catalog.
- Tap More options, the three dots, and then Settings.
- Turn Show add to cart button on or off.
The change can take up to 24 hours to apply, so even after you turn it off you may still get carts during that time, the Help Center warns.
On iPhone the path may be slightly different, and the same page has an iOS version.
What the customer does on their side
On the customer’s side, the order starts at the storefront icon next to your business name, according to the WhatsApp Help Center.
Here are the official steps:
- Open the chat with the business or its business profile.
- Tap the storefront icon to see the catalog.
- Tap the plus sign next to each item, or open the item and tap Add to cart.
- Adjust the quantity with the plus and minus signs.
- Tap View cart to check it and Place order to send it.
Once it’s sent, the customer taps View sent cart in the chat to see the order details again, says the same page.
The Help Center also suggests that, to ask about several items, the customer adds them all to the cart and sends the question in a single message, according to the official page.
The cart doesn’t close the sale on its own
This is the part that confuses people most.
An order isn’t final until the seller confirms it, the Help Center says.
In other words, the cart arrives as an order request, and someone still has to reply.
That reply is where delivery time, shipping, payment method and anything out of stock come in.
If a cart arrives and nobody answers, the customer built that order for nothing.
When the cart helps and when it gets in the way
It helps businesses that sell several items per order, like a takeout spot, a clothing store or a wholesale supplier.
It gets in the way when prices change often or an item needs a custom quote, because the customer builds a cart with a price you’ll have to correct.
In those cases, turning the button off and keeping the catalog just for browsing usually means less rework.
To send one specific item without making the customer search for it, our post on the WhatsApp link with a prefilled message helps too.
Where we come in
The cart organizes what the customer wants to buy.
What we do is set up and run the assistant on your business WhatsApp, using your own business content, so an order that comes in gets a quick reply, and that hands the chat to someone on your team when the topic needs a person.
