What automatic service on WhatsApp is and what it does not solve

Published on October 04, 2026

Automatic service on WhatsApp is any reply that goes out without anyone typing it.

But that label covers three very different things, with different prices and results: canned replies, option menus and AI assistants.

Mix them up and it is easy to buy the wrong one.

All three have to follow the WhatsApp Business Policy.

Canned reply

A fixed message.

It goes out when a customer types a set word or messages you after hours.

Good for your address, opening hours and delivery times.

It does not handle variation and cannot book anything.

Option menu

The customer types a number to reach a topic.

It works with a few fixed options.

It breaks when a question goes off script, and it keeps growing until nobody can find anything.

AI assistant

It understands the message however the customer wrote it.

It works from your business content, checks open slots, books, sends reminders and keeps a record.

It costs more, because it needs written content and review in the first few weeks.

What none of them solves

  • Medical, legal or financial questions that need a professional to take responsibility.
  • Price exceptions, discounts and negotiation.
  • Complaints and anything that needs your decision.
  • Outdated content: if the information is old, the reply is wrong, and no automation fixes that.

In these cases the conversation goes to a person, with the history attached, and the customer is told someone will reply.

How to choose

Only a few fixed options and little variation?

A canned reply or a menu will do, and it costs less.

Appointments to book, customers who write any which way and information only your business has?

That calls for an AI assistant.

If you are in the first group, we tell you before selling anything.

In one sentence

A canned reply informs.

A menu automates the choice.

An AI assistant: it understands the message, checks the calendar, books and reminds.

Only the assistant fills empty slots, and only it needs written content and review in the first few weeks.
