Migrating the number to the official API: what changes

Published on October 06, 2026

Migration moves your number out of the regular app and onto Meta’s official API.

The number then shows your business name, not a linked device.

The conversation stops living on a phone and starts living in a system.

What changes for the number

On the official API, the number is verified under your business name and becomes a business channel, not a device.

It is no longer a regular WhatsApp open on a phone.

The number must be used only for customer service, never as your main business line.

This is written into the contract, and it protects the line your customers already know.

What happens to your chat history and phone

Your chat history in the app doesn’t move to the API.

It stays where it was, on the phone, and doesn’t become the basis of the new service.

The app on your phone is no longer where you answer that number.

From then on, the service runs on the records the system creates, stored in its own database.

What you lose

  • The number leaves the app, and the phone is no longer where you reply.
  • Old app history doesn’t carry over to the new service.
  • Business verification is required and takes a few days.
  • Moving the number back to the app is not a supported option.

What you gain

  • Lower risk of being blocked, because you use it the way Meta intends.
  • Several people can answer the same number, with shared history from then on.
  • The service doesn’t depend on keeping a phone switched on all the time.
  • The number shows your business name, not your personal phone.

What needs to be ready first

Migrating needs three things sorted out, and none of them is technical:

  • Who handles the number day to day, and who answers when a case goes off script.
  • What your business already has in writing: services, hours, prices and what to say about pricing and lead times.
  • Who manages the Meta account, which is in the business name from day one.

Without that, the migration happens but the service lacks the right answers.

That material is what the assistant works from.

What happens in between

Service on the migrated number doesn’t go live the same minute.

Business verification takes a few days, and that step is what holds up the start.

Going back is not the expected path.

The decision is made beforehand, because halfway through is the worst time to change your mind.

What to avoid on migration day:

  • Migrating your main business number, the one customers already use.
  • Scheduling it on a busy day, with people waiting for replies.
  • Leaving the old number without a notice that service has moved.

Migrate now or later

Migrate now if the number is dedicated and no customers are waiting on it yet.

Verifying at the start gets in nobody’s way.

Wait if the number is your main line, or if you don’t have your content written yet.

Migrating without material just changes the channel and keeps the problem.

Who looks after the number afterwards

The number belongs to your business, and so does the responsibility for it.

The Meta account is in your name from day one.

Our team runs the service: setup, tuning and support.

Vexor operates the assistant on your number, but does not own it.
